Greenland is a place of myth. For most of us, it only exists as a story, a legend, a large white shape on a map, a place that got its name through deception. For Vala Árnadóttir, Greenland is very much real. Vala lives in Reykjavik, Iceland and travels to Greenland for work, and to immerse herself in a landscape that’s as beautiful and fertile as it is barren and unforgiving. She also goes there to fish rivers thick with migrating char. But for Vala’s 10-year old daughter, Mathilda, Greenland lives only in the stories that her mother tells and her own imagination. My Mom Vala introduces you to Vala and Mathilda, and shows you Greenland through Mathilda’s fantasies and Vala’s eyes.
